BLUE B

GOALS/STANDARDS and BENCHMARKS:

ISBE Science Goals

11.B.3c:Select the most appropriate design and build a prototype or simulation.

*Students will design and construct a plane or glider based on Leonardo daVinci’s drawings.

11.B.3d:Test the prototype using available materials, instruments and technology and record the data.

*Students will test fly their plane or glider and compare the distance their plane flew with others.

11.B.3e:Evaluate the test results based on established criteria, note sources or error and recommend improvement.

*Students will assess their plane’s design based on how far it flew and record any modifications they would make to their plane to improve its distance.

12.D.3a:Explain and demonstrate how forces affect motion (e.g., action/reaction, equilibrium conditions, free-falling objects).

*Students will explain the three forces that act on a rocket.

12.D.3b:Explain the factors that affect the gravitational forces on objects (e.g., changes in mass, distance).

*Students will identify the importance of the center of gravity of a rocket.

13.B.3b:Identify important contributions to science and technology that have been made by individuals and groups from various cultures.

*Students will identify important individuals in the history of flight and space.

OTHER OBJECTIVES:

EPS Goals

Technology Goal 2:Demonstrate research skills to seek, gather and evaluate information through the use of technology resources.

EPSTS12:Use the Internet

EPSTS15:Use grade level appropriate researching techniques

·Students will

  1. identify major turning points in the development of modern flight.
  2. identify people involved in developing and testing modern flight technology.
  3. create planes and rockets that use the principals of flight that have been studied.
  4. explain the basic functions of the wing, propeller, rudder, fins and jet engine.
  5. test fly student-made planes and rockets.
  6. analyze the successfulness of flight for student-made planes and rockets.
